Directed by Brandt Johnson
Starring Brandt Johnson, Ellen Jovin
One fall day, grammar guru Ellen Jovin set up a folding table on a Manhattan sidewalk with a homemade sign that said Grammar Table. Right away, passersby began asking questions, telling stories, and filing complaints. What happened next is the stuff of grammar legend.
Grammar Table was such a hit—attracting the attention of the New York Times, NPR, and CBS Evening News—that Ellen and her filmmaker husband, Brandt Johnson, took the table on the road, visiting all 50 US states as Brandt shot the grammar action. People from every imaginable background visited the table to share a laugh, settle disputes, and talk about their grammar insecurities. These conversations took place in small towns and big cities, by bookstores and coffee shops, on beaches and mountainsides.
But this story transcends grammar. It’s the story of an epic quest to bring us all closer together. In a time of extreme social and political division, the Grammar Table became a place of unity and connection. The conversations at the table help answer the question “How can we all get along?”
Jovin and Johnson will be present for a Q&A following the film, and copies of her national bestseller, “Rebel With A Clause: Tales and Tips from a Roving Grammarian” will be available for purchase at an informal book signing at 7:30 p after the Q&A.
Event Tickets are $20 inclusive.
FREE! Visit Ellen at the Grammar Table, in front of the theater from 4:30 p to 5:30 p and share what is most on your mind, grammatically speaking—from the Oxford comma to the places prepositions can go, the likely lifespan of whom, and more. Everyone is welcome!
"Rebel With A Clause" is made possible through the generosity of Dick and Sue Wollack, supporters of the theater and The Cameo Cinema Foundation.
